DECEMBER 2015 – ART BASEL MIAMI BEACH (USA) & TURNER PRIZE

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]From december 4th to 7th – Miami is then the center of the art market : this 14th edition of the ART BASEL MIAMI BEACH FAIR – established in 2002 – hosts 267 galleries from 32 countries. American artists prevail in this fair with a strong orientation for the great historical artists (Keith Haring, Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol, etc.) and major artists such as Wilfredo Lam (now at the Centre Georges Pompidou – Paris) or Frank Stella (now at the Whitney Museum – New-York)… The cuban artist Manuel Mendive enlightens the fair with the light and the soft color of his paintings. I find interesting to set as a mirror, one of the drawings of street artist Koléom.

As Noah Horowitz, the new manager for the Americas, explains it, the artistic quality is the highest in the world, without forgetting the permanent and arty party of Florida. In what was the house of the murdered fashion designer Gianni Versace (an hotel today), you meet Leonardo Di Caprio and… Rambo. On december 1st, the Swiss Gallery Gmurzynska does celebrate its 50th anniversary and… exposes Sylvester Stallone.

 

December 7th – One of the most prestigious awards granted by the Tate Gallery since 1984 – The TURNER PRIZE – rewards for the first time architecture. Often argued about for the abstruse aspect of the works it crowns, the Turner Prize, this year, attributes the prize to a group of architects. Assemble is a group at the crossroad of architecture, design and art. The collaborative practice of 15 artists together since Cambridge University is outstanding. Their buildings are endorsed by the desire to upgrade the social and cultural relations of the disfavoured neighbourhood, with design as a main instrument. Architects compose the main part of Assemble but the group is completed by a rich spectrum of skills : construction specialists, historians, philosophers… Thus the group always builds in collaboration with the inhabitants, as for the workers’ neighbourhood Toxteth (Granby Four Streets of Liverpool). The Granby Workshop is the best demonstration of Assemble’s philosophy : the neighbourhood’s residents are the animators of this social accomplishment creating and selling household goods. Furthermore, the profits finance other rehabilitation.
